Fall department meeting times - PLEASE GIVE YOUR INPUT ASAP

Dear colleagues, Jack and I learned from Melissa that our department meeting time (Wednesdays, 11-1) is in conflict with the PhD colloquium (Wednesdays, 12:00-1:30). That schedule is set to fit into established course times (i.e., other Wednesday afternoon courses run from 2-5 pm) as well as to accommodate faculty who wish to attend colloquia (COMM and LIS department meetings are held at 10 am). I'd like to explore whether it's possible to shift the JMS meeting time one hour earlier, so that JMS meetings run from 10 am-12 noon. This would also put our meeting time in line with the COMM and LIS departments and maybe give more people an opportunity to go to colloquium. Let me know whether or not you are comfortable with this shift ASAP, as we are in the midst of fall planning/scheduling and our departmental meeting time might impact a few things. That said, I would strongly advise instructors not to use the results of these tools as evidence of student cheating. Rather, they should use them as a conversation starter with the student. Instructor reaction across campus has varied, which makes it difficult to develop a policy about the use of ChatGPT. Many instructors embrace it, whereas others want to ban it. Because students will definitely want to use it if we ban it, I encourage instructors to experiment with ChatGPT and try to develop ways to incorporate it into their teaching. Survey for JMS majors about 400 level courses

Hi, If you teach a majors-only course in our department, please share this with our students. We are asking for their opinions on our 400 level course offerings to gain insight into our curriculum planning. Courses that are NOT majors-only include Introduction to Media, Writing for Media, Gender, Race, and Class in the Media, Exploring New Media, Digital Media and Society, Development of Media, Children and Media, Consumer Media Culture, Social Media and Participatory Culture, and Media and Climate Change. If you teach any of these courses, please don't ask your students to fill it out. The deadline for this simple, two question survey is Tuesday, March 28. Thank you so much for all of your help and all that you do for the department and our students. Steve * Hello JMS majors! Thanks to those of you who filled out our JMS Specializations survey earlier this semester. We learned a lot from you and are thinking through how we create new specializations based on your feedback. Another item that came up in our focus groups was the number and range of upper level (400 level) courses that we offer year to year. There are some courses that are offered more regularly than others, and we are trying to figure out the best rotation. We are asking you to let us know which of our existing Concept/Analysis courses you would like to see in the next year or so. These are different from the more Production and Skills oriented courses (which we may ask you about separately). We will then spend the one hour discussing matters raised in those reports as needed. Below are the typical reportable agenda items for our meetings. Colleagues, Course Atlas dropped the Fall 23 schedule on us Monday. We’re working to make the necessary fixes and additions before Spring Break is upon us. Attached you’ll find the list of JMS undergrad courses that full time faculty are slotted to teach. Please confirm that this resonates with the course assignments you’ve been given as well as the preferences you entered into the system last semester. Please note: this sheet does not cover all of your teaching. If you are teaching in MCM, the PhD program, SCI wide undergrad courses, or in other programs, it’s not reflected here.
