In N.J., she makes money, but he makes even more Women's wages near top, gender equity near bottom Tuesday, April 24, 2007 BY BETH FITZGERALD Star-Ledger Staff College women get better grades than men, but a year after graduation, the men are making more money, according to a study that found New Jersey's college- grad gender "pay gap" is second in the nation only to Louisiana's. Women earn 80 percent of men one year out of college, and a decade after graduation, women's earnings slipped to 69 percent, according to the study by the American Association of University Women. Most of that pay gap is ex plained by the differing education and lifestyle choices men and women make, according to the sur vey. Women are less likely to enter high-paid fields such as engineering and finance, and more likely to work part-time after having children. These choices have a dramatic effect on wages. But even after accounting for choices, there remains a 5 percent pay gap one year after graduation, and a 12 percent pay gap after 10 years. The group said that unexplained portion of the pay gap is "likely due to sex discrimination." In a companion analysis of cen sus data, the group found New Jersey women with bachelor's degrees earn on average 66 percent of what the state's college men earn. Again, this pay gap is largely the result of differing occupational and child- care choices. Only Louisiana's 64 percent college-grad pay shortfall was wider. New Jersey's male college grads earned on average of $78,633 per year for the three years ended in 2005, compared with $52,061 for women. The wages of New Jersey college women are the third-highest in the nation, after the District of Columbia ($60,251) and Maryland ($52,758). College women have slightly higher grade-point averages than men in every major, including science and math, according to the AAUW study. But the post-college world is a quite different competitive arena than academia. The scholastic performance of women isn't reflected in their compensation, and women who attend highly selective colleges earn the same as men who attend minimally selective colleges, according to the study. "The pay gap is not going to disappear just through educational achievements," said Catherine Hill, director of research for the AAUW. Hill suggested the pay gap can be explained in part by "maternal profiling" -- the idea that employers may put less energy into the careers of the women on their staffs because they are thought to be likely to leave the work force when they have children. Indeed, mothers are far more likely to quit: Among women who graduated from college in 1992-93, and had become mothers 10 years later, 40 percent were either out of the work force or working part-time, while less than 2 percent of fathers were out of the work force, according to the study. If maternal-profiling exists, "it reflects the assumption that an individual will behave like other individuals, and this is not only wrong, it's illegal and it can lead to decisions that are bad for men and women," Hill said. "If we had pay equity, then many more men might feel comfortable taking time off and being more involved fathers -- but they can't afford to." In many families, the father's career takes priority, and "in marriages that last a lifetime, these compromises could conceivably work out well for both parties," the study said. However, "women are much more likely than men to be single parents, and many mothers shoulder the full responsibility for the care of their children with little or no financial assistance from fathers. In this way, pay equity for women is a children's issue as well as a women's issue." Eileen Appelbaum, a professor in the Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations and director of the Center for Women and Work, has studied companies making conscious efforts to overcome an institutional bias that propels men's careers. "Young women who join a company after college sit alongside the men, and there's not much difference in their pay or job," Appel baum said. "Then after about three years, a senior manager looks for a young person for a plum assignment -- and they tend to pick somebody who reminds them of themselves at that point in their career." Appelbaum said enlightened corporations are working to overcome this kind of behavior, "be cause once you are aware of it, you can think about choosing the best person for the job and encouraging diversity in hiring and advance ment." In 2006, foreign-born workers made up 15.3 percent of the U.S. civilian labor force age 16 and over, up from 14.8 percent in 2005. The unemployment rate for the foreign born fell for the third year in a row, to 4.0 percent in 2006. The jobless rate of the native born also continued to decline, decreasing from 5.2 to 4.7 percent over the year. This news release compares the labor force characteristics of the foreign born with those of their native-born counterparts. The data on nativity are collected as part of the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly sample survey of approximately 60,000 households. The foreign born are persons who reside in the United States but who were born outside the country or one of its outlying areas to parents who were not U.S. citizens. The foreign born include legally-admitted immigrants, refugees, temporary residents such as students and temporary workers, and undocumented immigrants.
