What happened to the women in New Orleans public housing after Katrina hit?
Using a framework that both acknowledges the gendered, racialized, and
classed character of disasters, and understands that post-disaster life is
affected by pre-disaster circumstances, Dr. Henrici explores the most
vulnerable of Katrina's victims-women in public housing.
Learn about these women's struggles after being displaced, first by the
flooding in 2005 and then by the closure for demolition of much of New
Orleans public housing in 2006. Find out what these women have to say about
their sense of home, work, children, and community, and how they are doing
now; along with recommendations and strategies for our shared future.
Dr. Jane Henrici is an anthropologist who studies gender, race, and
ethnicity and their relationship to policy and development. Dr. Henrici
currently directs a study for the Institute for Women's Policy Research on
New Orleans women public housing residents and their post-Katrina
circumstances. Jane Henrici also teaches in the Department of Sociology and
Anthropology at George Mason University.
