The Retail Revolution: How Wal-Mart Created a Brave New World of Business by Nelson Lichtenstein, Metropolitan Books, 311 pages, $25.00 Buying Power: A History of Consumer Activism in America by Lawrence B. Glickman, University of Chicago Press, 403 pages, $45.00 The story isn't part of the official Wal-Mart creation epic, but it tells us almost all we need to know about the company's approach to the interests of its employees and the laws of the nation. Around the time that the young Sam Walton opened his first stores, John Kennedy redeemed a presidential campaign promise by persuading Congress to extend the minimum wage to retail workers, who had until then not been covered by the law. Workers have less to celebrate this Labor Day

The U.S. unemployment rate reached 9.7% in August and millions of workers who have kept their jobs have seen hours, wages, or some other form of compensation such as retirement plan contributions, cut. In a new Briefing Paper published ahead of the Labor Day weekend, EPI President Lawrence Mishel and Economist Heidi Shierholz discuss how whats bad for the worker is bad for the overall economy. These lost wages, the authors note, do not just lower living standards, they threaten to further delay an economic recovery. It will be a drag on the economy, Mishel and Shierholz write in the paper, The Recessions Hidden Costs. Wage growth is central to the growth of household consumption. Poverty Bytes: The Middle Takes a Hit in 2008: Census Bureau Report Shows Widespread Declines in Income and Health Insurance Coverage Share Share Nearly every demographic group and region tracked in the Census report experienced significant income declines, and no group experienced significant income gains. By Shawn Fremstad September 10, 2009 Today the Census Bureau released a report on the trends in income, including poverty, and health insurance between 2007 and 2008. The report shows that working-class and middle-class families were particularly hard hit by the recession that began in December 2007. Cut Loose: State and Local Layoffs of Public Employees in the Current Recession Share Share September 2009, Matt Sherman and Nathan Lane In the current recession, millions of Americans have lost their jobs. Unemployment has increased nationwide to levels not witnessed since the 1980s. This issue brief tallies more than 110,000 jobs that have been shed from state and local governments in the last two years and breaks them down by state (and metropolitan area where available). *Salt of the Earth* discussion

As part of RUL's celebration of Banned Books Week, SMLR librarian Donna Schulman will be moderating a discussion on the only film blacklisted in the United States, *Salt of the Earth*; this will follow its screening at the Scholarly Communication Center, Alexander Library, Friday, October 2, 2009, 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm. This is an extraordinary film. The plot was based on an actual strike of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers against the Empire Zinc company in New Mexico, and the film explores issues of race, class and gender in ways that predate later, more sophisticated films. But, it is not a boring "message film", partly because of the acting by Rosaura Revueltas, a lumionous Mexican actress whose career was ruined because she participated in this film, and by Juan Chacon, a leader of the actual strike. The film was created by a blacklisted director, writer, producer, and actor; its filming was marred by violence and the deportation of Revueltas, and its screening to the public was suppressed by boycotts, pressure from the studios, and the refusal of the projectionists union to screen it. Those of you who teach classes in labor history and labor studies will want to tell your students about this Banned Book/Movie event and encourage them to attend it. And those of you who don't might be interested in attending to see this film--for the first time or again. The 250,000-member UNITE HERE was one of the unions that left the AFL-CIO in 2005 to form a new federation. Trumka, who said he developed a special bond with Wilhelm around the struggle for Horse Shoe and Frontier Hotel workers in Las Vegas more than 15 years ago, hailed the reaffiliation, saying: The solidarity of the American labor movement is about to grow. It pained me personally when UNITE HERE left this federation four years agoand I cant think of a more uplifting way to begin this day than by welcoming UNITE HERE back to our union family as an affiliate of the AFL-CIO. Trumka noted the importance of unity within the labor movement as workers are hit hard by a bad economy, the lack of freedom to form unions and Republicans continual attack on working people. A united labor movement will serve the interests of working people during this time of incredible opportunity and progress. Wilhelm said: In UNITE HERE, we know what a fighter for workers Rich Trumka is, and we pledge to stand with him and fight with him to get workers what they deserve: a piece of the American dream. Solidarity will always overcome division our union will continue to be a strong and growing member in the house of labor. Todays affiliation marks a huge step forward in the push for unaffiliated unions to rejoin the AFL-CIO. In the coming months, Trumka will continue to lead conversations on reaffilation to strengthen the labor movement and fight for an economy that works for all. The AFL-CIO Executive Council met earlier today and approved the reaffiliation and using its authority under the AFL-CIO Constitution, expanded membership on the Executive Council and Executive Committee and named Wilhelm to those seats.
