The Unions of the States

This report reviews unionization rates, the size and composition of the unionized workforce, and the wage and benefit advantage for union workers in each of the fifty states and the District of Columbia, using the most recent data available and focusing on the period2003-2009 . Pooling data from the monthly Current Population Survey (CPS) over that period yields a sample size large enough to look at the experience of even the smallest states. http://www.cepr.net/index.php/publications/reports/the-unions-of-the-states/

Counting the jobs lost to China

China’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001 was touted as a win-win development that would benefit both the U.S. and Chinese economies. Almost a decade later, it is clear that American workers have suffered significant losses. In a new paper, EPI International Economist Robert Scott calculates that 2.4 million American jobs were lost between 2001 and 2008 as a result of increased trade with China, and that those job losses have occurred in every U.S. state, Congressional district, and most industries. Unionization Substantially Improves the Pay and Benefits of Immigrant Workers

*-* A new report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research<http://www.cepr.net/>(CEPR) documents a large wage and benefit advantage for immigrant workers in unions relative to their non-union counterparts. The report, "Unions and Upward Mobility for Immigrant Workers<http://www.cepr.net/index.php/publications/reports/unions-upward-mobility-i…>," found that unionized immigrant workers earned, on average, 17 percent more than their non-union peers. *FOREIGN-BORN WORKERS: LABOR FORCE CHARACTERISTICS -- 2009* [19 March 2010] http://www.bls.gov/news.release/forbrn.nr0.htm or http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/forbrn.pdf [full-text, 14 pages] The share of the U.S. labor force composed of the foreign born was little changed in 2009, and their unemployment rate rose from 5.8 to 9.7 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The jobless rate of the native born increased from 5.8 percent in 2008 to 9.2 percent in 2009. This news release compares the labor force characteristics of the for- eign born with those of their native-born counterparts. The data on na- tivity are collected as part of the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly sample survey of approximately 60,000 households. The foreign born are persons who reside in the United States but who were born out- side the country or one of its outlying areas to parents who were not U.S. citizens. The foreign born include legally-admitted immigrants, refugees, temporary residents such as students and temporary workers, and undocumented immigrants. The survey data, however, do not separate- ly identify the numbers of persons in these categories. For further in- formation about the survey, see the Technical Note.
