*N.J. Senate Passes Bill to Reorganize Colleges*
TRENTON—The state Senate pushed through one of the most sweeping reconfigurations of New Jersey’s university system in decades Thursday despite objections that the process was rushed and flawed.
The state Senate voted 29 to 10 Thursday and the state Assembly passed it by 60-18. The bill garnered enough support in both houses to amend the legislation on the floor in an emergency vote.
Supporters stated that the effort was key to boosting the state’s college system by giving the state another research university and folding a medical school into Rutgers’ strong life science departments.
“This represents substantial progress toward a plan that gives all our students world-class higher educational opportunities,” said Assemblyman Vincent Prieto, Democratic chair of the budget committee.
Critics on both side of the aisle, however, faulted the process for being rushed and largely conducted through backroom negotiations.
