*Union Membership in New York and New Jersey, 2009* [17 February 2010]

In 2009, union members accounted for 25.2 percent of wage and salary
workers in New York and 19.3 percent in New Jersey, compared to 24.9
percent and 18.3 percent, respectively, in 2008 the U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Michael L.
Dolfman noted that union membership rates in both New York and New
Jersey have remained relatively stable over the last 10 years,
fluctuating around 25 and 19 percent, respectively. (See chart 1.)
Despite lower rates than in 1995, when state data were first
comparable, both States had union membership rates above that for
the nation in 2009, as union members accounted for 12.3 percent of
employed wage and salary workers in the United States.
