FYI. L.A. County Settles for Voluntary Trans Fat Controls January 31, 2007 Los Angeles city and county officials on Tuesday reached an agreement with the local chapter of the California Restaurant Association to stop using trans fats voluntarily within 18 months, the Los Angeles Times <http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-transfat31jan31,1,3841418.story > reports (Barboza, Los Angeles Times, 1/31). A report released on Friday by the county Department of Public Health found that current state law prohibits the county from banning artificial trans fats in restaurants or requiring restaurants to disclose nutritional information in menus. County supervisors voted Tuesday to produce details of the voluntary measure and to encourage state legislation restricting trans fat and requiring calorie and nutritional labeling at restaurants. Under the agreement, the county likely will provide restaurants that are certified as trans-fat free with window decals, according to county officials. The county also joined the city council in recommending a ban on food services using trans fats in county and city office buildings (Los Angeles Times, 1/31). Commonly used term on the east coast, especially in the New York City region, where you will find many of these. The word came from the actual spanish word for "grocery store" - la bodega. John A. Snack-sized packages of fresh-sliced New York grown apples and baby carrots, marketed as "Grab Apples" and "Carrot Crunchers" will be available to bodegas customers in February for 50 cents each, less than the cost of a candy bar. Dr. Lynn Silver, Assistant Commissioner for Chronic Disease Prevention at the New York City Health Department, said "We are excited these healthy snacks will be more accessible to New Yorkers. We want to make it easier for kids to snack on apples or carrots rather than chips or candy." The healthy snacks are produced by Pride of New York member Champlain Valley Specialty of New York, a fruit processing facility in Clinton County. Champlain Valley sources its apples from other Pride members, including Crist Bros. Orchards in Orange County, Forrence Orchards in Clinton County, Fowler Bros. in Wayne County, and Northern Orchard in Clinton County. Products are distributed to the bodegas by Pride of New York member, Meadowbrook Farms, a Bronx-based dairy distributor, and the New York City Health Department will be providing some health education materials to participating bodegas. The expanded marketing effort with New York City bodegas builds upon another successful effort with the New York City Department of Education called "Farm-to-School." The school program has worked with New York producers and distributors to expand the presence of Pride of New York products on public school menus. As a result, "Grab Apples," "Carrot Crunchers" and other New York products have been made available to children in 1,450 schools citywide, which serve 860,000 lunches every day. The Pride of New York is the State's marketing and promotion program that generates interest and demand for New York food and agricultural products. She complements the CNRC research and transfer mission by assisting in providing a mechanism for rapidly translating updated nutrition research findings and making the "translations" available to a wide range of governmental and non-governmental agencies, as well as providers and recipients of maternal, infant and child nutrition and health care. Dr. Swanson also identifies areas of educational needs of maternal, infant, and child health components within the Extension network and helps identify educational research needs that may form the basis for new cooperative research.
