Candidates should have commitment to and experience with university teaching and be able to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in food and nutrition to support the Didactic Program in Dietetics and other major/minors in Nutritional Sciences. A demonstrated ability to establish a focused research program, secure external funding, and publish in peer-reviewed journals is required. Preferred areas of interest include obesity, diabetes, and chronic disease prevention and interventions, wellness or other areas that complement existing strengths in the department. Experience in multidisciplinary collaborations for academics and research is desired. Hello Everybody, Talking about the after school programs, I am looking for information or resources (like a tool or survey instrument) to assess the after school programs in the following areas: 1) Nutrition education/activities provided in the after school programs; 2) Physical Activity Education/opportunities and; 3) Food Environment or food choices offered in the after school programs. Connecticut has passed state nutrition standards that are more stringent than the federal requirements in many aspects. This applies to the after school snack program and I am currently the state coordinator of this program. To this end, if a district participates in the after school snack program and sign up to follow the CT Nutrition Standards not only are they required to meet federal standards, but also state standards. I have access and could fax you the approved after school snack menus that meet both state and federal standards. The website that you provided also has lists of snack items and foods that have been approved to meet the Connecticut Nutrition Standards. CA school food guidelines

CA has new standards for competitive foods. I'm trying to come up with list of packaged products at supermarkets that meet these criteria as well for snacks for teens. If anyone has any great teen snack ideas of packaged foods, please email me. Snacks sold to a pupil in middle, junior or high school, except food served as part of the USDA meal program, shall meet all of the following standards: - Not more than 35% of its total calories shall be from fat. Nuts, nut butters, seeds, eggs, cheese packaged for individual sale, fruits, vegetables that have not been deep fried, or legumes, exempt. - Not more than 10% of its total calories shall be from saturated fat. Eggs or cheese packaged for individual sale, exempt. - Not more than 35% of its total weight shall be composed of sugar, including naturally occurring and added sugar. For example, is there a set of healthy snack menus already developed and accessible to others that comply with the USDA snack pattern requirements but also have strong nutrition standards in place that go beyond the basic food/beverage requirements? New doctoral programs in Public Health at the University of Connecticut

Dear Colleagues: I hope that you will share the information below on our new doctoral programs at UCONN with potential applicants. Ann The Center for Public Health and Health Policy at the University of Connecticut is recruiting students for our doctoral programs for fall 2008. We are currently accepting applications for the PhD in Public Health with concentrations in 1) Social and Behavioral Health Sciences, and 2) Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences. These programs have interdisciplinary, nationally recognized faculty from across the university serving as mentors and advisors. The Social and Behavioral Health Sciences concentration focuses on the social, psychological, and behavioral influences on health, illness, and injury. Community based participatory research models will be emphasized in both classroom and research settings to prepare future public health leaders with the skills needed to understand population-based risk factors and to develop effective interventions. The Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences concentration offers students comprehensive and specialized instruction in theory and methodology that emphasizes a broad range of occupational and environmental exposures such as physical, chemical and biological agents, ergonomic exposures, accident and safety risks, and psychosocial factors. Students will explore the mechanisms of diseases and disorders related to occupational and environmental exposures, and control strategies ranging from local, exposure-specific to broad public policy. The doctoral program in Public Health is a full-time, interdisciplinary degree program. This cross-campus doctoral program prepares future public health leaders with the skills needed to enhance health in human populations. Students are typically matched with a Graduate Assistantship that entails 20 hours per week of faculty-mentored research, with a $25,000 per year stipend, tuition waiver and health benefits package. Applicants must show a commitment to public health and have completed graduate coursework in at least 3 of the 5 core areas of public health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Occupational/Environmental Health, Behavioral Sciences, and Health Services Administration). Applicants typically have an MPH or other related graduate degree.
