In the state of Alabama, NEHP (Nutrition Educators of Health Professionals/ a dietetic practice group of AND) focus groups have been meeting to discuss the future of nursing education. An Institute of Medicine Recommendation calls for 80% of nurses to be prepared at the BSN level by 2020. In an attempt to streamline nursing education, the focus group is looking at courses that are necessary/not necessary to foster a seamless course from ADN to BSN completion. In Alabama, the group is considering nutrition education for nursing. If any SNEB member has evidence-based support that demonstrates the importance of nutrition education (basic and clinical) for the BSN prepared nurse, I would greatly appreciate having that information as I prepare a report for this state-wide focus group.
