Comments on documentaries: Food, Inc. & Fresh?

SNE and F&NSPEC listserv members: **Apologies for any duplicate messages** I am hoping some of you may be able to point me toward information I think must be out there...but that I haven't been able to find! I've seen both "Food Inc." and "Fresh" - two recently released documentaries about the contemporary U.S. food system, with emphasis on serious problems created by factory farms and other practices common within large-scale agricultural operations. These are powerful and thought-provoking films, and they put forth - visually and orally - some critical issues (health, ethical, environmental to name just a few) for all to consider. That said, I am also interested in viewers who may question some of the perspectives/facts shared in either or both of these films. As I said above, I know the films raise critical issues, but I sense that some of the films' generalities might be overstated. (Admittedly, I may be wrong in this, but I'd like a broader foundation for evaluation than just my own inadequate knowledge base!) Thanks, in advance, for any insights you could share with me and/or any references/websites/etc. you could point me toward. Limiting TV Time: Effective Strategy for Preventing Weight Gain in Children - A recent study in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior

Hello SNEEZE, JNEB would like to share the September/October issue's press release (below) titled "Limiting TV Time - Effective Strategy for Preventing Weight Gain in Children". Investigators from the University of Minnesota's Obesity Prevention Center conducted a one-year community-based randomized trial that enrolled 153 adults and 72 adolescents from the same households. During that year, there were six face-to-face group meetings, monthly newsletters, and 12 home-based activities. In addition, each household agreed to allow researchers to attach a "TV Allowance" to all televisions in the household for the one-year study period. Television viewing hours, diet, and physical activity levels were measured before and after the intervention. A clear association was observed among adolescents between reduction in TV hours and decreased weight gain over one year. The investigators add, "Reducing TV hours is a powerful weight gain prevention strategy parents can use to help prevent excess weight gain among their children by changing the home environment and household television viewing norms." These findings suggest that television viewing is a risk for excess weight gain among adolescents. The implication is that parents who limit their adolescents' television viewing may help their adolescent maintain a healthy body weight. According to national survey data [NHANES] 2003-2006, about 31% of US children and adolescents are overweight or obese, therefore finding the causes for weight gain in this population is growing increasingly important. According to Simone A. French, PhD, principal investigator of this study and the Director of the University of Minnesota's Obesity Prevention Center, "We tried to intervene on behaviors that are related to energy balance, such as television viewing, sugar-sweetened beverage intake, physical activity and consumption of packaged convenience foods. Although the individual contribution of each of these behaviors to excess weight gain and obesity may be small, it is important to examine their possible role individually and together in promoting excess weight gain. Physical activity interventions for children have 'little impact' on weight

This leads me to wonder if there is individual variability at play in these results. We need to keep in mind that even though increases in physical activity may not lead to lower BMIs, it does lead to improved metabolic health. Physical activity interventions for children have small impact on overall activity levels and consequently the body fat and mass of children, a study published on bmj.com today suggests. Previous studies have shown that greater activity levels are associated with lower levels of BMI (body mass index) but that physical activity interventions have been unsuccessful in improving children's BMI. Many previous reviews have not, however, confined their analyses to whole-day activity and some relied on questionnaires rather than objective measures of physical activity like pedometers to measure daily steps taken. This is the first systematic review to measure physical activity using accelerometry devices which provide a measure of total bodily movement across waking hours. Authors from Plymouth and Exeter, England, therefore took results from 30 randomised controlled trials that took place between January 1990 and March 2012. All participants were aged 16 or under and must have completed an intervention that lasted at least four weeks. Eight studies involved only overweight / obese children and the rest involved children from all BMI categories. All trials were matched on age, ethnicity and socio-economic status and were adjusted for gender and baseline activity. Effects of intervention were calculated on both total physical activity and time spent in moderate-or-vigorous physical activity. Physical activity interventions analysed included one in the US which sought to increase the physical activity of 729 children (average age 11) by providing three 90 minute after-school activity-related sessions per week. Each session was made up of 60 minutes of high intensity activity but halfway through the trial the children were only carrying out an extra five minutes of walking or running per day and by the end of the trial this effect had disappeared completely. Another intervention, which took place in Scotland, was carried out over 24 weeks and looked to increase the activity of 268 nursery-school aged children by providing three 30 minute sessions per week during nursery hours. Again this did not increase the activity of the children and appeared to make them less active as they spent one minute less per day walking or running compared to the children in the control group. The review found that interventions achieved "small-to-negligible" increases in children's total activity volume with small improvements in time spent in moderate-or-vigorous intensities (equal to four more minutes walking or running per day), which would have minimal impact on children BMI or body fat (equal to a reduction of 2mm in waist circumference). The authors suggest that the interventions could be replacing periods of equally intense activity such as after-school activity clubs that would usually be spent outdoors. Previous studies have suggested that interventions do not work because they lead to higher calorie consumption. The authors conclude that in the mind of the public, physical inactivity is a major cause of childhood obesity and although the need to increase it is intuitive the "small increase gained from formal interventions seems insufficient to improve the body mass / fat of children". They suggest that further studies should capture both whole day activity and activity related to intervention-specific periods. In an accompanying editorial, authors from University College London suggest that the study's chosen method of analysis does have "inherent limitations" although the results provide the best evidence to date on the effectiveness of activity interventions in childhood. They suggest that the focus of other studies should also shift away from overweight and obese children and instead look at outcomes that relate to improving health in children regardless of their weight. New online library with grants for schools

CNPP is pleased to announce a new enhancement to SuperTracker and a major usage milestone: o Personal Calorie Goal Enhancement: We’re pleased to announce<http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome?contentid=2012/09/0311.xml&nav…> a new SuperTracker enhancement that addresses the most common request among SuperTracker users – the ability to set a personal calorie goal. You can now set a personal calorie goal on the My Top 5 Goals page. This allows users to align their SuperTracker plan with recommendations from a dietitian or other health professional.
