Comments on documentaries: Food, Inc. & Fresh?

SNE and F&NSPEC listserv members: **Apologies for any duplicate messages** I am hoping some of you may be able to point me toward information I think must be out there...but that I haven't been able to find! I've seen both "Food Inc." and "Fresh" - two recently released documentaries about the contemporary U.S. food system, with emphasis on serious problems created by factory farms and other practices common within large-scale agricultural operations. These are powerful and thought-provoking films, and they put forth - visually and orally - some critical issues (health, ethical, environmental to name just a few) for all to consider. That said, I am also interested in viewers who may question some of the perspectives/facts shared in either or both of these films. As I said above, I know the films raise critical issues, but I sense that some of the films' generalities might be overstated. (Admittedly, I may be wrong in this, but I'd like a broader foundation for evaluation than just my own inadequate knowledge base!) The University of California, Agriculture & Natural Resources is seeking an Area Youth, Families and Communities Advisor serving Placer and Nevada Counties. The advisor will promote healthy families and communities by designing, delivering and evaluating strategies for sustained behavior changes in youth and their families. The advisor will have the opportunity to work with 4-H members and their families in all communities of Placer and Nevada counties along with the after school setting where 4-H YD Program delivery also occurs. The Placer and Nevada county 4-H Youth Development programs are supported by 1.5 program representative FTE and serve over 1,150 youth and 400 volunteers in the community club and summer camp programs. Placer County 4-H YDP also provides school enrichment embryology programs that serve over 5,000 youth and 500 adult leaders. The advisor will interact and collaborate with youth serving/development organizations in both counties. A strong local nutrition network of public and non-profit organizations and agencies offering numerous collaborative opportunities is available including: Placer and Nevada county departments of Health and Human Services, Placer and Nevada county First 5 Commissions, Placer and Nevada county offices of Education, and Chapa De United Indian Health Services. The advisor will provide leadership, support, research and extension to nutrition programs in Cal Fresh and Nutrition Best. These programs are supported by 4 program representative FTEs. Outreach methods will include individual consultations, field days, tours, meetings, web conferences, ANR publications, peer-reviewed journals, and an appropriate mix of contemporary and emerging electronic tools such as online learning, web content systems and repositories, social media, impact and evaluation tools, along with specialized and public media outlets. I'm sharing some information on an App for smartphones for Increasing fruit and vegetable intake in children using storytelling and fun cartoon characters that are hidden at Farmers Markets and community gardens.
