Comments on documentaries: Food, Inc. & Fresh?

SNE and F&NSPEC listserv members: **Apologies for any duplicate messages** I am hoping some of you may be able to point me toward information I think must be out there...but that I haven't been able to find! I've seen both "Food Inc." and "Fresh" - two recently released documentaries about the contemporary U.S. food system, with emphasis on serious problems created by factory farms and other practices common within large-scale agricultural operations. These are powerful and thought-provoking films, and they put forth - visually and orally - some critical issues (health, ethical, environmental to name just a few) for all to consider. That said, I am also interested in viewers who may question some of the perspectives/facts shared in either or both of these films. As I said above, I know the films raise critical issues, but I sense that some of the films' generalities might be overstated. (Admittedly, I may be wrong in this, but I'd like a broader foundation for evaluation than just my own inadequate knowledge base!) Nutrition Education at Farmers' Markets

Here in Maine, our Farmers' Market season has finally begun and we are looking forward to providing SNAP-Ed at our farmers' markets that are now accepting EBT. Does anyone have any recommendations for curricula or programs that are tailored for nutrition education to low-income participants, specifically for a market venue? Food and beverage companies surpass 2015 goal of reducing calories in the US 3 years ahead of schedule

http://www.healthyweightcommit.org/news/food_and_beverage_companies_surpass… Consider this counterpoint from Michael Moss' book Salt Sugar Fat, p. 256: If everyone in America consumed the standard 2,000 calories a day or 730,000 a year, the 1.5 trillion in saved calories would reduce our collective eating by not quite 1 percent. It's actually bleaker than that, according to some health policy experts. In reality, many of us consume far more than 2,000 calories and processed foods make up a large part, but not all, of our diets. So the real drop in consumption from those 1.5 trillion calories is likely much less than 1 percent. Still, it's a start.

I'm looking for some good resources for parents of adolescents/teens who are overweight and starting to show signs of disordered eating. I have a lot of Ellyn Satter books, but need something to give and/or recommend to the parents. Any help would be great. Thanks! -Abbie Gellman
