New PBS Film: The Poison Squad

Greetings, PBS just aired a very insightful film on the history of the creation of food safety regulation and the Food and Drug Administration. I would highly recommend for all practitioners and nutrition and dietetic students/interns. It also is a good introduction to Federal food policy and highlights challenges that unfortunately still exist today. Dear SNEB members, I’m forwarding this message sent from registered dietitian and self-described investigative nutritionist, Melinda Hemmelgarn. She is the producer of Food Sleuth Radio<https://www.kopn.org/programs/food-sleuth-radio/>, which explores food and nutrition issues “beyond our plates”. Why is this issue relevant to SNEB members? As nutrition education practitioners, researchers, academics and policy advocates, JNEB members have a stake in how consumers understand not only the nutritional aspects of the foods they eat but also how aware consumers are of, and what their attitudes are toward, broad public health and environmental implications inherent in the production systems from which their food comes. How is this kind of information communicated to consumers? What kind of labeling is relevant and how do consumers interpret the information and translate it into household food decision-making? What is our role as nutrition educators in informing policy-makers of need for transparency about food sources and production methods? These kinds of questions are relevant to SNEB members and make for interesting questions for food and nutrition education research. We are trying to identify resources to train health care professionals.. primarily working in rural primary care clinics where an RDN is not part of the staff (but there may be a health coach (usually but not always an RN)... OAAA weight management task force volunteer

SNEB's is participating with the Osteoarthritis Action Alliance, specifically with its Task Force on Obesity. I have attached a brief overview of their work. If this interests you, take a look at their website: https://oaaction.unc.edu/about-the-alliance/ Of the lifestyle factors that potentially affect osteoarthritis the Alliance has focused their work on physical activity, to date. They have been focused on educating physicians and health care professionals. They now want to give some attention to nutrition education of the public regarding weight/obesity and its potential effect on osteoarthritis. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic and American Society for Nutrition are also participating. 1. They are seeking resources on nutrition education and osteoarthritis-both about weight and about nutrition. If you have any to share would you send me information. I will compile and share with them as well as the SNEEZE list. Send to kolasaka(a)ecu.edu 1. They are interested in having a webinar, sometime after July, on nutrition education and osteoarthritis. They want most of the focus on the link between obesity and OAA and anything consumers can do to prevent/treat obesity. They did say could include something on nutrition related to OAA prevention and treatment. The webinars are open and free to anyone. Is anyone interested in working on this webinar? 1. They are finishing a project that has modules for physicians for about osteoarthritis and physical activity. . They said there might be room for an additional module that would focus on weight and diet and OAA. These will be posted on their website. 1. They have done a systematic review on physical activity and OA. New Resources available for Review - please volunteer

Hello all, I have some new resources that I need reviewers for. To review for JNEB, you must first register in EM at: <https://www.editorialmanager.com/JNEB/default.aspx> https://www.editorialmanager.com/JNEB/default.aspx Below the title, there is a small purple ribbon with options and one is "register". If you are interested in writing a review, the instructions for writing reviews may be found on JNEB's website: <https://www.jneb.org/> https://www.jneb.org/ When you are there look under the "New Resources" tab and you will see "Guidelines for Reviewers of New Resources.". You will note that reviews are to be no more than 700 words which would include the bibliography and short description that I will provide to you. I have the new resources and once you have volunteered and told me which resource you would like to review I will then invite you in the EM system to write the review. You will then respond in EM to accept and, I will ship the resource via UPS to you (so I do need a street address, not a PO Box). Once you receive the resource you will have 30 days to write the review and submit it in the Editorial Manager (EM). System. The resources that are currently available for review are: 1. A few questions about local food systems - rural areas

Hi there - I am hoping some of you on these lists can help me identify some people and best practices for some work I am doing on local ag and food systems in rural areas. Specifically, I am looking for ideas about improving the food options in rural communities in 3 areas: Dollar General Stores: of course they are spreading all over rural areas - and some actually have some healthy choices. Are you aware of efforts - locally or beyond - of people working with DG to ensure healthy options are there? For example, the one in my rural town has some healthy options - prepared salads, fruit etc but could do a better job with whole grain breads and lower fat milk products etc. Any info on places that have successfully gotten their store to carry healthier items would be appreciated. Food co-ops: in places without grocery stores - some have banded together and created co-ops - if you can share examples or models that have been successful - that would be great. Best practices for mom and pop grocery stores: small family owned stores in rural towns are struggling - but some have certainly survived and thrive - any resources out there that talks about stores that have managed to stay in business - and how - what best practices are they using?
