Hi everyone! As a dietitian and retired Extension Educator, I've enjoyed teaching classes for our university's OLLI program for lifelong learners 50 and older. I'm in the process of getting ready for a Zoom class on "Basic Kitchen Foods for Covid-19 Times" next Thursday. Rather than a class handout, I've developed an extensive blog page on basic foods, food safety and recipes at https://bit.ly/BasicKitchenFoods I've included a "contact" form at the bottom if someone wants to ask me something after the class. I plan to keep the blog post updated after the class. I'd appreciate your thoughts and suggestions for foods, links ... anything that jumps out at you. nuts are lower in calories?

A patient called me and said she was reading the FoodNetwork magazine and there was an article saying that nuts have 32% fewer calories than originally thought because USDA was calculating the caloric value incorrectly. She said it mentioned that the label on the KIND bars reflects the lower calorie label. I don't have the article in hand but she said there was no reference. Can anyone point me to information that would support that article? Since I am retired I don't see all the news releases but I still try to keep up. I am surprised I didn't hear about this in some other fashion. Dear SNEB members, Those of you who attended the open business meeting at the 2019 Annual Conference may recall that I gave a presidential address in which I shared my vision for the Society. I suggested critical roles for nutrition educators, researchers, academics and advocates to simultaneously address public and planetary health. SNEB webinar supporting Dietetic Interns

Creating this type of educational material is an ideal activity for interns, particularly in this time of social distancing. HER NOPREN Summer Speaker Series for Students

This summer HER NOPREN is launching a first-of-its-kind Summer Speaker Series for Students. Learn more about HER, NOPREN, and the HER NOPREN working groups below. This evolved out of an ask from HER NOPREN member Dr. Katie Bauer, at the University of Michgain, to see if members could support interns this summer. And our HER NOPREN COVID-19 School Nutrition Implications Working Group Fellow Dr. Caroline Dunn's enthusiasm to help match students. We are actively trying to identify projects within the network that could support students and trying where possible to match students with unpaid or paid projects. Please keep me posted if you have projects that could use an intern or are an intern looking for a project. See attached for initial listing of both. The HER Resource Manager is also trying to call attention to any projects that could benefit from an intern, as described further below. Whether or not an intern for any HER NOPREN projects, students (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral level) are invited to participate in the six-part summer speaker series for students. This struggle is particularly significant for those professionals working with cohorts who cannot realize the full potential of social media or web-based platforms, including individuals with autism. Individuals on the autism spectrum are particularly vulnerable to health disparities in the current environment and, at the same time, must continue to strive for independence in the activities of daily living. To bypass the challenges of social distancing and limited resources, Community Support Services, Inc. has created an 11-part video series on creating inclusive food preparation activities for individuals with autism who are currently house-bound. The videos offer pragmatic tips regarding ten food-related activities that occur naturally in residential kitchens and which are ideal for supporting independence. Topics include: * Hand Washing * Spreading * Chopping/Cutting * Toaster Use * Collating Meals * "Instant" Projects * Potato Prep * Nutrition-based Games/Activities * Dishwasher Use * Slow Cooker Use The webinar will introduce and sample the videos and all the materials are available to the public on the CSS website free-of-charge. About the Presenters Janice Goldschmidt, MPH, MS, RD, LDN Janice Goldschmidt, MPH, MS, RD, LDN received a Master's Degree in Nutrition as well as a Master's in Public Health from the University of Maryland -- College Park. She is actively involved as both researcher and practitioner in the nutritional status of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities and has published and presented on this topic in numerous professional publications and conferences (including the SNEB annual meeting). In 2018, the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities published her first book entitled "Teaching Authentic Cooking Skills to Adults With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Active Engagement." Janice currently serves as the Director of Nutrition Services at Community Support Services, where she is responsible for the development of programs intended to support the health and wellness of adults with autism.
