Parental reports were obtained at pretest, posttest, 6- and 12-months. Results showed that prevention mothers increased presentation of new foods, measured portion sizes for their child, involved their child in food preparation, were more responsive to their child during eating, had better knowledge of best practice feeding strategies, higher feeding efficacy, reduced feeding misconceptions, and less uninvolved feeding. At the 12-month follow-up, children from the prevention group were less likely to have overweight or obesity. Hughes, PhD Professor, Children's Nutrition Research Center Baylor College of Medicine Dr. Hughes is a Professor at the Children's Nutrition Research Center, Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. Her research focuses on parental socialization of eating behaviors in children. With a background in developmental psychology and expertise in psychosocial behavior, Dr. Hughes has specifically targeted parent-child relations during mealtimes and their impact on the development of child eating behaviors and subsequent obesity. As part of this research focus, Dr. Hughes examines general and appetite regulation and their influence on the development of various child eating behaviors. Her research is vitally important because it views childhood obesity from an ecological perspective, combining well-established theoretical perspectives in developmental psychology with current knowledge of child nutrition. She has applied this perspective to diverse, underserved populations who are at a greater risk for childhood obesity. These efforts are critical to the formulation of effective prevention approaches to obesity. Dr. Hughes has extensive experience using both direct observation and parent-report methods to assess parenting in varying contexts. She has been the Principal Investigator on four large federally funded projects focusing on parenting/feeding, child eating self-regulation, and childhood obesity. Thomas G. Power, PhD Professor Emeritus Washington State University Dr. Power is a Developmental Psychologist who has conducted considerable research on parent-child relationships, children's emotional development, and parental feeding styles and practices as it relates to childhood obesity. He has considerable research experience on studies with young children including infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. His three most recent grant projects involve parenting, children's eating behaviors, and childhood obesity among Hispanic families from low-income levels. A particular interest of his research is the impact of parents on the development of eating self-regulation in young children. Dr. Power is currently Professor Emeritus at Washington State University.

Best, Lorraine Weatherspoon MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT -- MS Dietetic Internship (MS-DI) Director Position Summary The Department of Food Science & Human Nutrition at Michigan State University (MSU) is recruiting a fixed term academic specialist who will be responsible for directing the supervised practice portion of our combined MS Dietetic Internship (MS-DI) Program in addition to teaching and service responsibilities. This is a 12-month fixed term position. The distribution of effort is 40% teaching, 20% outreach/service, 15% curriculum development and 25% administration for the dietetic internship program. The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the planning, growth, development, implementation, and ongoing supervision of the Michigan State University accredited Combined MS Dietetic Internship Program related to supervised practice. In addition, teaching and service responsibilities are also required. The master’s degree portion of the MS-DI was developed in 2018 in conjunction with the already established dietetic internship and didactic programs in dietetics at MSU. Annually the program recruits about 16 MS-DI students who complete a minimum of 1000 hours of supervised practice at locations throughout the state of Michigan with their graduate degree coursework completed online. The average time to completion for all elements of the MS-DI program is 16 months. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : * Manage the supervised practice component of the combined MS-DI program in conjunction with the MS-DI academic coordinator. Manage program goals and objectives; and design and coordinate practice experiences (offsite, on campus, and simulation) to meet the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accreditation standards. * Design, coordinate and evaluate the supervised practice requirement. * Participate in dietetic intern recruitment, advisement, counseling, and successful program completion. * Identify and recruit sites, preceptors, and other external partners and/or agencies as appropriate to achieve program goals and outcomes * Actively engage in curriculum development and teaching relevant to the dietetic interns * Monitor and evaluate the dietetic internship curricula for alignment with ACEND standards. * Conduct exit interviews, graduation surveys, and site/preceptor evaluations to ensure strong student outcomes and achievement of program goals. * Create and maintain records, annual reports, ACEND accreditation standards, program fees, verification processes, credentialing exam documentation, and other reports as needed. * Manage budget and participate in budget planning with the department chair and steering committee. * Lead and serve on relevant departmental, college, university, and student committees as needed. * Maintain active membership and presence in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and state affiliate * Perform other duties as needed. Controlled environment agriculture (CEA), or indoor growing, produces fruits and vegetables indoors under optimized conditions: growers control for a variety of variables, including light, temperature, and more. Growing may take place closer to retailers, reducing food transport mileage, and the practice may offer other benefits to people and planet, including more consistent production, harvesting when ripe and ready to consume, and reduction and/or re-use of scarce resources, such as water.
